If you have never been critically ill, you won’t value excellent health infrastructure, if you haven’t met well tutored first class brains, you won’t understand the value of excellent education infrastructure. You will only think of roads, drainages, flyovers and transport infrastructure, and those will be your yardstick for good governance.
Until a leader sees education and health of the citizens as topmost priority, the society is in comatose. As at today, many Nigerians are walking corpses, they do not know the state of their health and once they can move, they believe all is well with them.
Many do not understand the value of quality education, they cannot differentiate between giving children quality education and sending children to school. Health and education remain two critical areas that influence human development directly.
That is why Babatunde Raji Fashola remains my yardstick of someone who tilt towards excellent leadership in Lagos state governance since 1999.From his first term in office, he made everyone realize he is a game changer and he touched virtually every sector without negligence.
He utilized the structures of state agencies and parastatals left behind by his predecessor Bola Ahmed Tinubu to bring about a revitalized Lagos state, he empowered and created a level playing field for members of his cabinet to discharge their duties to the utmost of their capabilities ,and he led with a listening ear allowing contributions from his aides and others that worked with him in governing Lagos state, no doubt, he is a leader that positively changed the psyche of Lagosians for a great future.
His trademark of improved health services through the general hospital in our local government and others is still felt till today, unfortunately the general hospital in our local government can no more cope with the influx of patients from both Lagos and Ogun states due to the closeness of the local government to Ogun state, thereby warranting the need to build more in adjoining LCDAs and LGAs.
The present Lagos state government has a yeoman’s job to do with regard to education and health infrastructure upgrade and human capital improvement with upgrade in those two areas. Leaders are distinctly different from rulers and impostors.
